More Americans are Obese than Overweight

Obesity The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) just released an alarming study. We've known for some time that the rate of obesity has been growing, but it now appears to be winning the battle. According to their research, the number of obese Americans in 2005 exceeded the number of overweight Americans.

The study is called "Prevalence of overweight, obesity and extreme obesity among adults: United States, trends 1976-80 through 2005-2006." You can read the entire study by clicking here.

The study is very disturbing when you view the trend since 1988. While the amount of American's consider overweight because of their Body Mass Index (BMI) has been fairly stable, obesity has experienced a steady climb.

The statistics show that just over 32% of Americans over the age of 20 were overweight, while just over 33% were obese. That's a staggering one out of three individuals suffering from the consequences of obesity, which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, include:
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
  • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
